Egypt’s President, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, has signed into law the Anti-Cyber and Information Technology Crimes legislation. The anti-cybercrime law gives the Egyptian government the power to block any websites it deems to be a threat to national security as well as spreading the “ideas of terrorist organizations.” During July 2018 Egypt’s parliament approved and passed a bill that will see social media accounts with more than 5,000 followers regulated and treated like media outlets.
